The weird time I tried to write a thriller novel

Published 22 days ago • 1 min read

Hello Reader—

I spent six months trying to write a thriller novel.

Thrillers were big on Amazon Kindle.

Writing one thriller novel would help me grow my author brand.

After writing a thriller book, I was going to quit my dreary day job and work on my writing business full-time.

The problem?

My idea for a thriller novel was terrible.

I won’t bore you with the details.

But I spent months getting up at five AM plugging away at my manuscript.

Then, I met one of my writing heroes.

His name is Robert McKee.

Robert McKee is a screenwriting guru film companies like Pixar call when they have problems with their scripts.

He’s the author of one of the greatest books ever about storytelling.

He was hosting a conference about storytelling.

After it was over, I asked McKee, “How does a writer figure out what to write about?”

He said, “Write what you love to read. Write the truth”.

He even wrote those words on an autographed copy of his book.

Days later, back at my writing desk, I looked at my bookshelf and opened my Kindle library.

My bookshelf was full of books like biographies, memoirs, books about creative writing, and some self-help books.

I wasn’t reading any contemporary thriller books though. I didn’t know much about the conventions of a great thriller book.

And yet, for some reason, I was trying to write within that genre.

So I binned my thriller story away, and I turned to nonfiction.

And slowly, I built a writing business and quit that job.

Hi Reader, I was on Threads the other day. Fun social media network. Nice user interface. No ads No bots. And no trolls like X (yet). I found a post from a writer on Threads. He says he doesn’t use ChatGPT to get ideas or to write posts. Instead, he proudly publishes content that reads like a journal. And it’s 100% human. He even created an image of a stamp saying “100% human”. He labels his content with it. Sounds great, right? (I’m all for personal writing) Well, maybe not. I don’t...

Hi Reader, I got a few responses to yesterday's email about getting plagiarised on Medium. A few readers said they were sorry this happened to me. I'm hanging in there ;) One writer wanted to know if Medium told me someone plagiarised my work. That writer is having trouble with scammers, too. And another writer asked, "How can I prevent plagiarism?" Well, I found out about the episode after a reader wrote in a while back. He'd stumbled across one of my articles under someone else's name....

Hi Reader, Chet emailed in to say a guy plagiarized me on Medium. I was plagiarized. I wrote an article about comedian George Carlin’s odd note-taking system a while ago. The article went viral, and Medium paid me a few hundred dollars. (You can read my article here) A few days later, a plagiarizer copied my article into his Medium account. He changed the picture and republished it under his name. When I heard about it, I left him a snarky comment and moved on with my day. I used to worry a...
