The 3 things writers want

Published 18 days ago • 1 min read

Hi Reader,

I’ve spent years interviewing, coaching, and working with writers.

They usually want one of three things:

  1. To get paid
  2. To build an audience
  3. To share their story

You want to get paid to write?

Freelancing is the easiest way to start. Freelance writing doesn’t always pay well until you specialize in a niche.

Once you’ve picked a niche and have some testimonials, consider copywriting. It pays more. Joseph Sugarman’s The Adweek Copywriting Handbook is a great read for this approach.

You want to build an audience?

Write about what you do on social media. Don’t rely on the algo, though.

Ask readers and followers to join your email list. Incentivize it with a lead magnet. Substack is a good place to start.

You’ve a great story to share?

Don’t write a book… yet.

Instead, practice writing parts of your story in public. That’ll help you figure out if people want to hear your story. Try LinkedIn or Medium as the reach is good.

If you’re getting good engagement, then write your book.

These are all principles I teach inside the Successful Writer’s Club. It’s a mega-bundle of writing courses.

It currently costs $19.95 a month.

I’m closing the club down permanently later this week, though. From next month, I’m working more closely with a select group of writers.

More on that soon.

However, joining the club this week will give you lifetime access to the courses inside.

Now’s your last chance to join.

Write on,
Bryan Collins

Hi Reader, The other day, a writer I admire on X tweeted, “I’m sad the newsletter era is ending.” I was more than sad. I was worried. I’ve put dozens of hours and $$$ into growing my newsletter. Was it all for nothing? Are newsletters dying a slow and painful death? You see: For years, I got paid to write via ads on my blog posts and affiliate promotions. I earned well from both. But today, these revenue models for writers have a big problem. Your writing business can tank when Google changes...

Hi Reader, Can I get your advice on something? I’m hosting a paid workshop for a select group of writers in a few days. I’m teaching attendees how to get their first 1000 email subscribers. You see… An email newsletter is the easiest and fastest way to start and grow a writing business. And I want to help a few Pro Writers do just that. Here’s my problem: I’ve spent years growing and running my email list. So, I’m guilty of the curse of knowledge. I want to ensure I cover the basics and...
