Odd things readers say

Published 16 days ago • 1 min read

Hi Reader,

Over the past few days, I emailed you about my mega bundle of courses inside the Successful Writers’ Club.

A grumpy keyboard warrior took time out of his busy morning to write in and say, “Bullsh*t!”

But…

That’s not the first time someone sent me negative feedback.

I regularly get emails full of expletives that I can’t write here.

Then there was the time I experimented with writing literary fiction.

An Amazon reviewer left a one-star review and said, “Terrible, don’t buy!”

(To be fair, the book was terrible.)

Now, I could ruminate on negative feedback, crawl under my desk, and question why I ever started a writing business in the first place.

But, I get fun feedback too.

A while ago, I recorded a series of grammar shorts for my YouTube channel.

One grammarian commented on a few videos, “You Baldy!”.

He has a point.

And another said, “You should totally shave your head, you’ve got the bone structure for it”.

Appreciate the hair advice bro!

I was amused to get a message from Jabar. He’s in jail for a crime he didn’t commit but he “loves the podcast.”

I realized long ago that not every creative project works out.

Some articles, stories, and books get five-star reviews.

Some offers convert.

And some content attracts trolls.

I’ve spent over ten years writing and publishing content online. If you’re writing online, feedback from trolls is part of the job.

But, you’ll also get good feedback too.

Focus on that.

If you want to take this business seriously, acquire testimonials.

If a reader writes in to say they like your stuff, ask for one.

If a client likes your work, ask for one.

If someone buys one of your courses or products, ask for one.

It’s much easier to sell a book, product, or service if you have customer testimonials.

In fact, I built out a library of testimonials, which you can see here.

Start acquiring yours today.

You’ll earn more down the road.

That’s one of the principles I teach inside the Successful Writers’ Club.

It goes away this weekend.

Write on,
Bryan

Hi Reader, The other day, a writer I admire on X tweeted, “I’m sad the newsletter era is ending.” I was more than sad. I was worried. I’ve put dozens of hours and $$$ into growing my newsletter. Was it all for nothing? Are newsletters dying a slow and painful death? You see: For years, I got paid to write via ads on my blog posts and affiliate promotions. I earned well from both. But today, these revenue models for writers have a big problem. Your writing business can tank when Google changes...
