My EXACT journaling process

Published 24 days ago • 1 min read

Hello Reader—

I’ve kept journals of different for twenty-five years.

I wrote journal entries in notebooks and password-protected files.

I bought fancy Moleskine notebooks.

And I tried popular writing and digital writing apps.

Notebooks work fine.

But, they filled my bookshelves.

And finding old entries took ages.

So, I stored them in the attic.

I started using a password-protected file via Microsoft Pages and plain text files.

These always work and don’t take up much space.

You can edit your entries using almost any writing app.

This process worked until I reached 200,000 words.

Then, I tried Evernote.

But didn’t like how it combined my journal entries with other clippings and items I saved online.

These days, I use Day One for journaling.

It’s purpose-built for journaling.

I keep multiple journals about my personal life, business, and creative projects.

Arranging and tagging entries is easy. And I can add photos and other meta information (like location).

Is Day One essential for effective journaling? No.

Is it pleasant to use? Yes.

Don’t worry too much about apps.

Every writer should keep some type of journal.

Here, you can read more about how I write journal entries.

I put together this list of journaling topics to help you start.

After twenty-five years of journaling, here’s what I learnt:

Journaling regularly fosters clear thinking.

It can help you become a better writer.

And it’s cheaper than therapy.

After years of following this practice, remember:

A consistent journaling habit is more valuable than picking the right tool.

Journaling regularly will help you beat writer’s block and build a catalog of stories you can use.

That’s one of the principles I teach in my course Conquer Writers Block.

Hi Reader, I was on Threads the other day. Fun social media network. Nice user interface. No ads No bots. And no trolls like X (yet). I found a post from a writer on Threads. He says he doesn’t use ChatGPT to get ideas or to write posts. Instead, he proudly publishes content that reads like a journal. And it’s 100% human. He even created an image of a stamp saying “100% human”. He labels his content with it. Sounds great, right? (I’m all for personal writing) Well, maybe not. I don’t...

Hi Reader, I got a few responses to yesterday's email about getting plagiarised on Medium. A few readers said they were sorry this happened to me. I'm hanging in there ;) One writer wanted to know if Medium told me someone plagiarised my work. That writer is having trouble with scammers, too. And another writer asked, "How can I prevent plagiarism?" Well, I found out about the episode after a reader wrote in a while back. He'd stumbled across one of my articles under someone else's name....

Hi Reader, Chet emailed in to say a guy plagiarized me on Medium. I was plagiarized. I wrote an article about comedian George Carlin’s odd note-taking system a while ago. The article went viral, and Medium paid me a few hundred dollars. (You can read my article here) A few days later, a plagiarizer copied my article into his Medium account. He changed the picture and republished it under his name. When I heard about it, I left him a snarky comment and moved on with my day. I used to worry a...
