Hello Reader—
I stopped writing on social media for a few years.
Become a Writer Today was getting thousands of page views weekly from SEO.
I wanted to focus my time and money on building my site.
I didn’t care much for vanity metrics.
I couldn’t eat out on likes, shares, and Twitter bot comments.
So I deleted X, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
Then, Google rolled out a painful series of updates.
My site survived.
(Many other content sites didn’t).
But traffic dropped by more than 50%.
And so did revenue.
What happened next?
I reframed how I think about content strategy.
SEO content is ONE way to connect with readers today.
So is X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, Pinterest...
The problem?
The rules and algo can change on any one of these channels.
I still invest dozens of hours and hundreds of dollars into creating new articles for my site.
But I also write on social media too.
My honest advice for any writer today?
Forget the keyword tools and AI bots.
Instead, you need to build a relationship directly with readers.
Write on one or two platforms where you feel comfortable.
Share authentic, personal stories.
If you’re stuck, try these writing tips.
Ask readers to join your email list.
Send readers your best stuff.
A direct relationship with readers?
That’s algo proof.
To do this, I recommend ConvertKit, as they can help you grow your list faster.
Once your list gets to a certain size, they’ll even hook you up with advertisers so you can get paid.
