How writers can get things done

Published 23 days ago • 2 min read

Hello Reader—

I interviewed one of my heroes a few years ago.

David Allen.

He’s the author of Getting Things Done (GTD).

The book was a sensation in Silicon Valley in the early 2000s.

I read the book a few weeks after a boss fired me from a job… for NOT getting things done.

You see:

I was a BIG procrastinator.

24 Great Topics to Get Creativity Flowing

A great place to start if you are looking for a new creative idea for your writing work.

I used ideas inside David’s book to balance writing as a side hustle with a corporate job.

David’s system helped me start writing online and build my business.

I even got nerdy and created the Moleskine GTD system.

Now, David’s book is aimed at executives and busy professionals with massive to-do lists and a crammed calendar.

But GTD works well for creatives and writers too.

If you’re curious, David told me why in this interview.

How Long It Takes to Write a Book

Here is our guide on how long it will take to publish your first book.

Here are my two favorite takeaways.

  1. Your mind is for having ideas not for holding them.
  2. Once a week do whatever you need to do to get your head empty again.

Basically, when you think of an idea for a writing project or your business, record the idea in a trusted system.

Do the same when you think of something you need to do.

Don’t rely on memory.

That’s a recipe for burnout.

And on Fridays or Sundays, spend an hour or two reading through your old notes, ideas, to-do lists, and calendars.

Decide what you want to prioritize and ignore.

As you probably guessed, I was a big productivity nerd for years.

I’ve even created a course all about efficient writing. Details below.

Hi Reader, I was on Threads the other day. Fun social media network. Nice user interface. No ads No bots. And no trolls like X (yet). I found a post from a writer on Threads. He says he doesn’t use ChatGPT to get ideas or to write posts. Instead, he proudly publishes content that reads like a journal. And it’s 100% human. He even created an image of a stamp saying “100% human”. He labels his content with it. Sounds great, right? (I’m all for personal writing) Well, maybe not. I don’t...

Hi Reader, I got a few responses to yesterday's email about getting plagiarised on Medium. A few readers said they were sorry this happened to me. I'm hanging in there ;) One writer wanted to know if Medium told me someone plagiarised my work. That writer is having trouble with scammers, too. And another writer asked, "How can I prevent plagiarism?" Well, I found out about the episode after a reader wrote in a while back. He'd stumbled across one of my articles under someone else's name....

Hi Reader, Chet emailed in to say a guy plagiarized me on Medium. I was plagiarized. I wrote an article about comedian George Carlin’s odd note-taking system a while ago. The article went viral, and Medium paid me a few hundred dollars. (You can read my article here) A few days later, a plagiarizer copied my article into his Medium account. He changed the picture and republished it under his name. When I heard about it, I left him a snarky comment and moved on with my day. I used to worry a...
